Legal. Or illegal? I am going TDY to Hawaii in July was wondering what was the stipulations on that. If legal I will pick some coral and mail it back to myself.

pretty sure it's illegal.... i know bringing corals from other countries will get you locked up....a co- worker tried to from the philipeens...you need a special license to collect corals.... i could be wrong...

No, you can't take coral from Hawaii. It is most defiantly illegal. I did look one time online fit live rock there and it was like $10/pound. There is also the superstition about taking things from the islands.

I actually read that corals such as zoanthids and palys are legal to take. I will find the article.

While harvesting and damaging coral in Hawaii has been illegal for decades, no protections exist for the other half of the reef ecosystem: the fishes and invertebrates essential to reef health and beauty.

Just because it's legal to collect something there doesn't mean you'll be able to take it out of the state or into the continental US, I'd do a bit more research...

Plus you will have bad luck. You can't even remove a lava rock from the island without being cursed!

Plus you will have bad luck. You can't even remove a lava rock from the island without being cursed! Oh so that's what happened to me, I'm cursed I thought it was just bad luck... I was stationed in Hawaii twenty years ago and they were very stricked about what live goods you could take out and bring in. When I went there I had a bird and it went in to QT for three months.

sorry if that was strong but i don't believe in black magic, curses, or the easter bunny. But i love the HEE HAW song " If it wern't for bad luck i'd have not luck at all, gloom dispare and agony on me----"
Showing my red neck age with that one. Not sure why but the big guy up there likes me and takes care of me well. Even though i'm sure some would say that is superstitious.

I asked the Agricultural Agent if I could bring a live rock back and they said I could.

Seems many people take stuff and then will do ANYTHING to get it back. I have customers (shipping companies) that actually refuse to ship stuff taken from Hawaii back to the islands. I don't believe in supers***ion either, but I'm just sayin'... I'm not sure I'd want a visit from the 'Choking Ghost'.

EDIT: **** that swear filter...

the guy I ordered my trigger from said it is illegal to pull coral from the waters. they do not sell coral in hawaii (not hawaiian native corals). people still do it that live on the Island but to ship that out and if you get caught ouch.

Yea you won't see coral in any fish stores or in anyones fish tank, at least not legally. Go to the Waikiki aquarium to see some beautiful corals. And hanauma bay to see the fish

My brother lives in Hawaii. He said if you are a legal resident of Hawaii, you can obtain some sort of a "collectors" permit/license for personal use to stock an aquarium and such. There are still limitations to this, not too sure on everything but you are definitely restricted from collecting from preserves and the like. As far as collecting to sell, that's usually illegal, and taking it off the island is also illegal. It's especially illegal if you're a mainlander lol.
