View Full Version : Clown fish
Is it hard to raise clown fry? I came home today and walked in on my clowns laying eggs. Is it possible they will hatch in the tank and have some survivors as I'm definitely not going to setup another tank to try and raise them. It's funny that clowns are orange and their eggs are orange as well. I've always just seen white/brown eggs from my freshwter fish that spawn.

We sat through a lecture on breeding Clown fish at MAX. The speaker went from start to finish. You will need to separate the eggs from the other fish. He was using a low flow tank for the fry and was feeding green water at first. Later on he switched to rotifers. It was enough for me to never want to raise them.
Ok I figured it would be a task. They will just be fish food then. Thanks tom. That's what I do with freshwater fish that spawn all the time, free food. I'm not bother to try and remove eggs and raise them in a separate tank.

We have always taken the same approach. Did have a Ciclid survive the feeding frenzy once.

it is good when you have them raised and you can sell back to the LFS for credit then you are talking expense free reefing for a year lol

Actually you raise the green water to feed rotifers, which are the clown fry first food. after a couple weeks of rotifers then you move on to freshly hatched brine. You use 7 2 liter bottles of greenwater, harvesting 50% of 1 bottle a day to feed the rotifers. Seemed like 4 2liter bottles of rotifers. So it is an involved process. If possible leave the eggs with the parents until right before they hatch, them move them to a hatching tank where you have to have an airstone moving water across the eggs. The parents will eat the fry. Check with the Breeders registry I think if they are still around you can find plenty of articles on raising the fry

I raised clown fry about 15 years ago, you wont get much store credit for them. So if you thinking about making a profit its just not there. I did it more for the learning experience and the glory of being able to say I did it. 15 years ago there probably wasn't more than 100 people in the US who had done it.
Geez. How often do these things lay eggs? I went out for a burger And come back to them laying eggs.

They found out you were getting burgers and got turned on! :D
Honestly, I would love to try and raise some, but I know it would be a task. Growing the rotis wouldn't be that bad, I have an article on it bookmarked, but the rest of it would probably be.
Lol. Yea would be cool to say you did. But that seems like far too much work. If they can make it on there own that's fine but I'm not going thru all that extra effort to raise them

My clowns lay eggs every 12 days. They turn silver after a couple days and tghe next morning they're gone. 12 days later there are more eggs. This happens like clockwork for about the last 3 or 4 months.

Lol only so much I can do for them. I provide them with a roof over they head, water in they house and food in the water. If they choose not to eat it that's on them.
