View Full Version : small led build
okay, so since i cant seem to find a MH... im tossing around a LED build...
My plans are 12 LEDs
-6 royal blues
-im not sure on whites... i kind of want to do like 3 of the natural white and 3 cool white.. opinions?
for the heatsink... i was curious to what size i should get for 12 leds?
also what optics should i get? i have 40 degree optics on my par30 led on my biocube right now, and i think thats been too bright for a lot of my stuff.. thoughts?

I think 60 degree optics are what most are using. Talk to will or dennis at ae some time. Also snoopy. They are the most knowledgeable ones on led that I know of.

I have one already built, sitting in the garage. Its all yours for $100. Its 6 3w blue cree's & 6 3w white cree's, its all dimmible. Its on a 9" by 9" chuck of Heatsink in a nice little fixture. I bought it off dhaquaman about a year ago and never used it. He was running it on a biocube. It also comes with all the reflectors. Unk what degree tho. Its a nice looking ficture. Better than most DIY

It dims, you can dim both the whites and blue separate

ok, so I'm just learning my LED's... If a person were to get that fixture as you have it, would it just plug into the wall? Does it have the power supplies built in? What would you use for a dimmer? Could you just use a home depot light fixture dimmer switch?

Go to Rapid LED, and they have a ton of kits. Its all pretty much specialized parts/dimmers/power supplies. On this set up, there is a seperate power supply in a box with the 2 dimmer knobs, and plug for the computer style fan.

The way five o has it the white and blue run on two separate drivers, they then go to a separate dimmer (potentiometer) this changes the volts from 0-10v. So If I remember correctly this fixture should have 5 plugs for the wall?
2 for driver
2 for potentiometer
1 for fan?
I may be incorrect but I almost went this way for my huge fixture and it works great but its all manually dimmed instead of done by apex. Good for biocube though! I am working on a pico tank right now and going to build another led setup.

Sorry to be a P.I.T.A. BUT.... how easy are these type of setups to build? I thought I had someone with electrical expertise to help me but they fell through... so now I have ordered a bunch of LEDs but not sure where to go from there. HELP!

I had it for a little over a year. When I was done it, I put it up for sale on LVVR for what I had in it, but nobody jumped on it. I then put it on the R/C and it sold in a matter of minutes. I think I'm going to build its big brother this summer for a birthday present to myself.
