So I think it's time to start the build thread...

I recently purchased Andymans 55 gallon setup, but it will from here on out be called the 55
G of justice.

Its drilled with a glass holes overflow with two 1 inch overflows and two half inch returnss

It has a four bulb t5 retrofit and I added some led moonlights

I got the tank on Saturday and spent that time getting bulk heads and plumbing parts

Sunday I painted the back and the stand and hood

Monday I plumbed

Tuesday I started filling for a fresh water run through

Today I finished filling it, but I noticed some leaks on the bulk heads so I had to drain it and work on that... It f
Looked like one of them migh have been stripped lucky I hAd an extra one on hand.

I still need to get some more stuff but this is my work in progress.

Luke, I would keep a lookout for a Vertex IN80 or IN100. I had the 80 on a 55 a while back and it was great..

I have had the SWC Extreme Cone 160 on my 90 for 7 months. Great skimmer. I a video of it in the equipment section some time ago. I have the modified version coming next week. Moves 900 lapf Moving the original to the frag tank and the new one is going in the 90. Hers a link to the video http://vegasreefers.com/forums/showthread.php?975-New-Skimmer

Also stay away from any skimmer running the Sicce pumps. I talked to Luke at Reef Filtration and he pulled all the skimmer that sold with that pump from his site. I guess it's hit or miss if the pump will fire when you repower it.

glad that i could and i showed up right before you left! The reefing gods have answered your prayers. lol
so hows was your experience drilling the tank?

Luke
06-04-2011, 10:37 PM
the drilling went really well. not nearly as hard as i expected. just kept the hose on it and went slow. we drilled two 1 inch holes for the overflow, and two 1/2 inch holes for the return.

It was a pretty productive day though. I got the tank drilled, the back painted, the plumbing done, the overflow siliconed...

i ordered some dry rock from reef cleaners today, and then also i noticed they sell sand (40 pounds for $30.00) with free shipping on both. So hopefully this next week ill be doing some aquascaping!

now i pretty much just need to make water... fun fun..

wet floor again!!! This time it was the filter sock that backed up and was dumping the overflow water on my floor! I was getting ready for bed and I walked across the living room tile in the dark and I heard a splash... Same time I felt my foot get wet! I was like oh. Geez! Not again!!! Quickly checked for cracks and pipe leaks... Nothing... Opened up the cabnet and found water spewing out the top of the sock onto the euro brace of the sump onto my floor!!! I had topped off an hour earlier so I know where the water level was then compared to when I found the wet floor and it only lost about 2 gallons, but that makes a huge mess for only being 2 gallons! I'm just glad I caught it before I went to bed Instead of when I woke up !!!

that sucks! did you call him? he's usually REALLY good with customer service... i doubt he knew it was going to be 110 today! also are you sure they're dead? sometimes it takes a few days for those snails to open up. i ordered a custom clean up crew from him last summer for my biocube 14 and it was great. im going to order another one for my new 55 here soon... i need to catch my hermit crabs though im going to put them in the sump and the snails in the display.

If your pets do not make the trip, we offer an Alive Arrival Guarantee. To take advantage of the guarantee, notify us within a reasonable time for the item to recover from shipping stress, or to confirm if it didn't make the trip. What I find really funny is there was no knock on my door and definitely no notice. The package, then was supposedly redelivered at 2pm, which is when I got it. It's just ridiculous... I tried a check valve on an earlier tank. It was already jammed after 3 months.

so i could:

A. point one of my loclines up towards the surface

or

B. drill a tiny hole into the locline (the one closest to the glass?)

???

The tiny hole will work, I would get a bigger sump. You will never have to worry about an over flow if your system is designed right the first time. I'm out of town for a 5 days and the thought of an overflow has never crossed my mind. I could not have said that if I was running a check valve. I've tried them on previous systems, they all will fail over an extended priod of time with build up. All it take is on snail or something running through your system and getting the check valve flapper stuck open. & water is on the floor.

What about a single check valve on the return? Seems the census here says stay away from them at all cost? Is it a salt corrosion issue? I've used them on ponds with no problem is why I ask.

You should not need a single check valve on a reef system. The sump shoud be able to hold the displaced water if there is a lose of power. Check valve are fine for ponds. If your pond over flows, your grass get wet. If your reef floods, you need new carpet

The tiny hole has saved me now on two occasions. First was power outage due to some construction in the neighborhood and the second was my three year old discovering how to play with power strips. Two simulated power outages and no damage based on the drilled hole.

I'm still of the opinion better safe than sorry. I have the holes in the lock line, and alarm in the sump to alert if the water gets to high, good size sump that should not overflow and the check valve. If the top off malfunctions the alarm will sound. I agree that check valves malfunction all too much. So I researched to find the best one.http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/1-george-fisher-wye-check-valve-swiss-made.html. It's clear so I can see into it and I can maintenance it since it can be opened up cleaned with out removing it from the plumbing. It's happy wife insurance.

So I was checking out my fuge tonight to see how my cheato is doing.... And I found my six line in there! So somehow he jumped the overflow, rode the pipes down, jumped out of the filter sock, jumped the baffle, and ended up chilling my fuge.... This guy is a beast! Think k imight ditch the filter sock now...

Okay so here's what ended up happening... the post office wouldn't refund any money and they are the one's that messed up. John refunded my money for the hermits that didn't make it. Did get the base rock today and it does look great! Lots of holes to stick those darn frag plugs in, LoL! So just wait for the cooler weather to order a cleanup crew or ask John if he can send a cool pack. Also make sure you ask him to select the overnight express mail with the option to hold at post office so you can pick it up and not have it on a hot truck all day!

Oh! ...and I'm glad you found your 6 line... that sneaky guy!

I had a fire fish do the same, swam past the skimmer pump too and didn't get sucked in!

Most check valves have springs inside of them. If you want a salt water safe "check valve", you can use a swing check valve. I just has a flapper inside of it. However, that flapper can and will get bio film on it and could leak in an emergency without proper maintenance. I'm always amazed at people who plumb up the tanks with valves and pumps and all sorts of things with hard plumbing and never use unions so it can be taken apart for maintainence....

My check valve does not have a spring and can be disassembled in place for cleaning. This go to my favorite saying "you get what you pay for" there is a link in this thread somewhere.

we're way past check valves at this point...

update on the sixline wrasse: i went to take him out of the fuge, but he jumped into the next section of the sump, the bubble trap things, so there is literally no way of getting him out of there... im hoping he got bored in there and jumped into the return section when i get home tonight.

So I got home from work today... And I kept smelling something super nasty down stairs... So I took out the trash did the dishes no luck... Finally I checked the sump to see my skimmer pulling out super black crud! I emptied it on Wednesday so this nastiness was accumulated in 2 days . It was like Black! Ended up emptying it and smell went away! I'm going to have to remember to empty it more often!

okay so here's the deal... i have two clown fish which i would do anything to get them to host something... on the other hand i got this stupid goby thats decided he wants to perch on my clam EVERY DAY! the weird thing is if any other fish swims around the clam, the clam closes up.... but the clam will let the goby jump around all over him no problem. its ridiculous. my fishtank is broken. my clowns swim freely and my goby is hosting a clam.
