View Full Version : "INSANITY" Jimmy's 600 gallon cube

All right now, I guess since Jimmy will never figure out to use his computer. I'll go ahead and start this build thread for him. Since his build truly does deserve a thread. Lets start from the beginning. Jimmy was sitting there checking out the LVVR for sale section like he does every day, probably six times a day. Feeling the need to spend some money on fish/coral or some supply that he probably doesn't even really need. There it was BAMMMMMMMM! Greg (Smellslikefish) was selling his six hundred gallon fish only cube. The little hamsters started running like they were main lining Red Bull in Jimmy's head.
Jimmy gave me a call and says "What do you think about me turning the 600 gallon cube into a reef?" I proceeded to tell him for the next month. "DON'T DO IT, IT'S TOOOO BIG". You would have to be insane to even attempt to turn a fish only tank into a reef of that size. You'll need to drop all kinds of cash on pumps, ballast, bulbs, wiring, end caps, PVC, PVC glue, bulkheads, spa-flex, lock-line, buffing, chemicals, salt, RO filters, DI resin, fish, rock, paint, powder coating, aluminum, rivets, light diffuser, wood, molding and sand. It all went in one ear and out the other. Jimmy could picture the giant reef inside of his house.
So the next Saturday there we were, Hebsway, Jimmy, Greg and myself at the store before opening hours loading up Jimmy's new (used) cube onto Sonny's trailer. That was a job all in itself. But we managed to get it done. We dropped off tank in Jimmy's garage for now. The stand was dropped off a few days later at the powder coaters. (Electrostatic Plating) The steel stand was in pretty rough shape. It had some major rust, beyond surface rust and was really showing its age. It was beyond the standard spray paint job. It needed to be completely sand blasted down to bare metal and some minor repairs.
So a week later, they called and said the stand was ready for pick up. We decided to go with something a little different than the usual generic black or blue. Since the tank is going to be a complete and total rebuild. Were going to do it right, and give it a pizazz. The stand is was powder coated bright red. It came out awesome. It cost a decent chunk of change since they had to put some man hours into it, but it was well worth it. I looks like a new car.
Here are a few pictures of the stand when I picked it up from the powder coaters. I'll get some better pictures from Jimmy tomorrow and update this thread a little more. We have a pile of goodies sitting in the garage just waiting for the big set up. I'll tell a little more later. Its not worth it, going into to much detail with out the pictures to back it. I know were all picture junkies.

Thanks guys with alot of help from my friends I believe this tank will be a monster.... Matt and I worked on the canopy this weekend. He had a vision...It turned out great. Got the skimmer, ordered, the pump and now waiting on the calcium reactor.... A few more weeks to go and we will have water in the tank and tear down the 400 8ft. Figuring out which fish make the trek into the new tank. Probably putting about 10 fish for sale soon. Especially the Hippo tangs... =) Thanks brother. I need to be more computer literate!!!!

Its kinda of hard to picture how to the light rack will work, but its all squared away in my head. We kinda of stole a few ideas from Ricks light rack. The top section is built nice and strong, enough to hold all the ballast. Even the heavy magnetic type. It is built completly out of a aluminum and platic (light diffuser) & held together with aluminum rivets.

That giant skimmer only pulls 120w via the Reeflo Gold. Not to bad I guess, But you also have to add in the extra 600gph flow needed, but thats just going to be T-off'd the Hammerhead Gold. Shouldnt be to bad. Whats 120w for a skimmer below the tank when your are running 1600w + of lights above the tank.
Clintonramsey
06-07-2011, 07:50 AM
So do you plan on running the skimmer off of the hammerhead or on a dedicated pump. Last post was a little confusing. Just saying that I learned the hard way that this is a bad idea ;)
five O
06-07-2011, 08:02 AM
The skimmer itself has a Reeflo Dart gold (Recirc) to make the micro bubbles. It still needs 600 gph of flow to bring fresh water into the skimmer. This water will be carried in via a T-off the Hammerhead return pump. The tank should only have three pumps total. A Hammerhead gold for the return, Dart Gold for the skimmer, and a Eheim 1250 for the Korallin 4002 which is in transit.
Clintonramsey
06-07-2011, 08:18 AM
Just to let you know I had a similar setup on my skimmer. I had my hammerhead running my closed loop and powering my insump skimmer. The problem was when I would turn the pump off the 2 in intake from the tank would back siphon into the sump and flood quick style. Perhaps since your intake will be from the sump though you can avoid this by drilling good sized anti siphon holes on the output nozzles in the tank. Just saying' it sure made a mess at my house :/
Clintonramsey
06-07-2011, 08:21 AM
Actually now that I think back I also tried to run the skimmer off of my return pump and had similar flooding issues. You may want to consider feeding the skimmer from the tank overflow pressure or just running a small dedicated internal pump in the sump to reduce flooding risk.
RickMartin
06-07-2011, 09:14 AM
Make sure to have a sump big enough to handle all the back siphon. Dont depend on the one way valves they always fail. On my tank the return was an inch and a half below the top of the water. Calculating the amount of water in the display came to 20 gallons and inch that meant about 30-35 gallons when power is lost heading to my sump. With @ 30 gallons in the sump for filtration that meant at least 65 gallon sump size. I went with a 100g

I see where your going reguarding the back flow. I guess I'll just have to tackle that issue when we start to plumb the tank. I'll keep that in mind. If need be, I guess we can run the skimmer of an additional pump. Between Jimmy and myself, we have plenty of them sitting around.

I agree 100% with ya Rick. Sump volume will not be an issue. I would never run or rely any sort of check valve. They will fail at some point. I pretty much have tank plumbing down to a science now. I have knocked out about 10 in the last 2 years, and they are all fail safe. I'm of the mind set, keep it simple

skimmer is run the same way as you guys are thinking of doing. Mine goes from the hammerhead pump to 1 inch line feeding 8ft frag tank, then a tee feeding skimmer and return
just cut another line into feed for skimmer and now it has slow feed to 80 gallon flat frag tank

Well today we did a little running around and picked up some odds and ends. Plus we got the future fish room cleaned out today. Jimmy's house has an atrium which is attached to the room which will house the display tank. Its pretty nice, the atrium has a roof and is protected from the elements. It also has a water spout for the house and a drain. This fish room will contain the skimmer, chiller & pumps. The sumps will still be housed under the tank to aid in temp control.

sweet skimmer, now if r2d2 would clean the house as well as the water lol
I dont know what I like about the apex best. Finally having a controller for the ca reactor was the biggest benefit, but controls for heaters, being able to turn anything off for maint without tracing out the cord, being able to check stats and get email alerts if something gets out of whack. No more stack of timers for lighting, powerhead control. I love everything about it lol

Thanks Rick, This will help Jimmy feel a little better about dropping the coin on the Apex. I was telling him how big of an upgrade it will be over his ReefKeeper Lite. Its almost a mandatory feature on big tanks these days. Its a way to protect your investiment with all the notifications and safety features built into the unit.
RickMartin
06-12-2011, 11:35 AM
Its worth the investment, I don't regret a single penny well worth it for peace of mind when you are out of town And I have added quite a few more accessories
Some additional benefits that also save money is that I don't run a chiller, but the fans are set to kick on when the temp gets to 80, before they ran all the time so they were fighting the heaters.
No worries about heater failure. Control for ORP, which can be used to just watch the overall health if you don't run ozone. I know when i run out of co2 because of ph alarm on ca reactor so there is less likely hood of alk issues. MH will kick off if temp gets too high so as not to boil the tank. Just so many things about it are useful. I might sell the tank someday but I doubt if I will sell the APEX

Well the BRS order arrived. Brand new RO/DI system with all the bells and whistles. It has the oil filled pressure gauge, dual TDS meter & multi stage DI canisters. We figured since Jimmy will be making a ton of water, might as well start off the right way. The new 46.5" VHO UV Super Actinic bulbs that we needed to finish off the light rack also arrived along with numerous GFO/Carbon reactors and all the odd and ends.
The Apex arrived the other day and is looking sexy (for you Chris). Tho it was a little camera shy. I will try to get a few pictures posted in the next day or two. This tank is getting close to set up. All the big items have been purchased and are in storage. Now we just need to get the tank moved into the house, slap a fresh polish job on it & buy some fresh sand. Jimmy is a little back an forth about the rock he has in the other tank. The existing 400 gallon tank has some nice rock and has a lot of coral already attached, but it has some decent amount of aptaisa and majano's. We're looking at Macro rocks and seeding it with some live rock and starting off the new tank with out any of the head aches of the exsisting rock/tank, but this will be a pretty large investment since a few hundered pounds would be needed. But I've seen some othe coolest aqua-scaping done using Macro, Decisions-Decisions. What are your guys thoughts?

I say go clean with the marco rock. You can use their cementing puddy to glue your scape exactly how you want it. No pests. All around clean, easy, safe no headaches.

I would buy all air pacific live rock. Here's what I hate about all the other types of rock.
Florida/Caribbean Rock: might as well call it Crab/Mantis Shrimp Rock, every other piece has one of these in it. You get alot of cool creatures but need to QT it for months.
Pacific Boat Rock: It's basically dead already.
All the various forms of dead rocks: Porousity is often terrible, they have no immune system, so basically the most voracious agressive weed will take over with not as much as a sponge to slow it down. I put a few in my tank to see what they do, they really suck. Good for some structure that's all. Plus unless you're going to become the new quarantine king of Las Vegas, you'll probably introduce all the same pests over again.
I just don't think you can beat a natural product. There's too much going on at a biological level that fake rocks are not capable of doing.

Dude. personnally i have had awesome luck with aptasia x. I got aptasia ridden rock from sonny long ago. I removed it from the tank put it in a tub with an air stones and a light to make them come out. I nuked the **** out of them. I have only ever seen i or 2 in the rocks in the last year and i buried them in aptasia x and havent seen any in 6 months atleast. My vote is take the rocks out one or 2-3 at a time and nuke the **** out of them you are stepping right and taking your time to set it up. take the time to kill the aptasia and save your rocks/corals and money. Just my 2 cents but i believe you can nuke them out of exsistance.

+1
I used florida aqua cultured rock an fought back mantis shrimp for years. But I did get some cool hitchhikers as well but the mantis battle was not worth it. There are also theories on RC that this rock is laden with phosphates. I have been running a phos reactor to offset this but have still been fighting a non stop detritus shed from these rocks. So I say no Florida unless you power wash and quarantine it.

I used a mixture of marco and live rock. The worst thing I can say about marco (via BRS but probably the same) is there are too many little holes for detritus to gather up in. There was prob a small amount of nutrient leached out but not terrible.

Now that the beast is inside, we started by sanding down the back a little so we could paint the back. The tank is going to a three sided walk around, so the black back ground will hide some of the wires that will run up to the light rack/power heads. We also decided to cover up the blue over flo with some fresh back acrylic. We want thecoral an fish to be thecenter of attention and not a bright blue over flow. We threw a little black plastic spray paint on the overflows teeth just ensure a nice clean install.

Cool. As I said, I know I have seen it before, but its uncommon. As far as the black pipe, its just something I have heard before. I know most all of the LFS use it.
did some research... there is a difference between the white PVC and black ABS... the ABS plastic apparently leaches a chemical called styrene... i havent seen anything on what affects it would have on a reef system...

It is too small. My wife is kinda giving me that oh my god look now that it is in the house. She has also used that as a ploy to get a bigger house.

Haha... just a suggestion but u might want to get busy buying another house b4 u set up the tank! Oh and I LOVE the red!!! Awesome! U can start charging the neighbors a fee to come see the tank... overtime it might make enough to compensate some of the expenses!

We bought all stuff at the Home Depot right by your house, I didnt see any white 1.5" PVC when we were there. Must have missed it I guess. We have the tank all drilled with all new bulkheads and fresh silicone installed. Jimmy and I put in about 8 hours yesterday. I think the tank will be up and running vey soon. Its very close. Most of the time consuming stuff in done, and the parts are just sitting there wating to be installed.
If the Depot doesn't have the 1.5" pvc, Ferguson plumbing supply should. They have several stores around town and sell to the public.
There is also Harrington plastics off the 215 and Gibson area.
The tanks looking good!

the apex is a bit intimidating at first, but after a few hours of toying with it you kinda get the hang of what it's doing. my best advice is set stuff up how you think it'll run, then manually set the time on the unit and see if it actually does what you want it to do. I spent hours setting times and days to make sure all my ramp ups/downs were working as expected.

Hydrothermal worm at x525 magnification
mesafire
07-28-2011, 02:01 PM
Full pic for those wanting see "worm from Sheol".
2044
"This is not photoshop, no clever graphics, no movie scene... it's a hydrothermal worm.
And it's a real creature.
It's just really, really small. So small in fact, that this image comes from an electron microscope.
Taken using an FEI Quanta SEM, this image is amazingly zoomed in 525 times. The real width of the field in the image is 568μm, or 568/1000 of a millimeter. It's far larger than an atom, but still among the smallest living things.
The worm, as scary as it looks, is something most people will never actually get to see (or have to worry about, for that matter). Hydrothermal worms are deep sea creatures, almost as small as bacterium, and are largely found near hydrothermal vents in the ocean."
Thanks Rick

I just got a chance to look at this thread all the way through. WOW that is amazing. How many fish are you planning total when done? I love the black and orange tang as well it is amazing. Awesome work as well. But you know the credit has to go to your little one for doing all the heavy lifting = ). Cant wait to see more as this progresses.
