So the owner of this Gold Rim was very concerned about it coming down with ick and a few secondary infections. Generally this is pretty much a death sentence for a fish like this. I have an empty tank and work in a drug lab so lets try some stuff, maybe we can turn it around.
Ick and patchy infections.

First thing we'll do is a freshwater dip. Salinity is 1.007 and we'll let him stay here for 20 minutes. We'll be using just tapwater with water conditioner added for this. The little plastic box is called an Acclimate, a must have device. I'll keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get too stressed.

When my maroon clownfish got ick, I did a fresh water dip for 10mins and then stuck her in a qt with a cleaner shrimp and everything was good to go after about a week and a half ;)

So now after 20 minutes, he's looking quite stresed and laying on his side. This is a good time to begin going back to saltwater.

Now the salinity is back up, he's perked up again.

Into a luxury QT tank with a decorative tube and macroalgae to eat. Also a strong powerhead to keep the water saturated with oxygen. with parasites in the gills he will need every bit he can get.

The treatment will be Metronidazole. It's pretty good against ich and good against anaroebic bacteria (bad bacteria). It also doesn't hurt good bacteria and won't kill the macroalgae and many inverts. Every 10ml of this solution contains 100mg of Metronidazole. We will add 100mg to the tank and call it a night. Hopefully he's still alive in the morning.

Did you add 100ml or mg? Just wondering for study sake.

It's 100 milligrams per 10 gallons. I think I might add more though. Decisions. Some places recommend as high as 250 mg's.
I can eaither go conservative and it might not work.
Go dangerous and it might be too much.
Decisions..decisions...I say go big. 250.
Regular hobbyists can buy it in this form

the $65 is for a hundred grams. That's alot. Most people would only need 1-10 grams.

Today it looks like.
Very spotty, with evidence of some nodules starting to fall off.
Swimming well, but slightly lethargic in responding
Coloration is decent.
Has not eaten anything.

Now is a 25% water change and a second does of 250mg/10gallons.

Umm, I talked to him tonight and perhaps you will want to re-think the part about "picking your fish up healthy in a few weeks later...." :(

Sure I'll take a sick fish, I make no garantees. The tang bit the dust, but I think a less far gone one would have pulled it off.

I think bit the dust is code for "kicked the bucket" :)
