Cowfish and Boxfish are extrememly sensitive to ick. They eat alot of plant matter, so it's not suprising it's eating the garlic. It's not a fish that does well in the kind of tank where all sorts of other fish are getting thrown in. it will catch every disease they have.
My first boxfish, http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+24+77&pcatid=77
lived about a week in a QT tank by itself. It looked healthy, was eating, then came down with massive ick when I was gone for 1 day. Never recovered.
Second boxfish same species, I fed it 3 times per day and it was just slowly losing weight. it was very friendly and personable, but just never could keep weight on.
If I were to try a 3rd, I would probably just treat it prophalactically.

So now that you're the owner of a boxfish, you'll need to QT everything that goes in that tank.

it's treating a fish for ick before it has ick.

In my opinion, i would go to the petco near walmart and get some garlic xtreme. This stuff got my sailfin, hippo, yellow, and naso tang to eat and took away the ick that the hippo had. Works every time
