I would like to get some opinions from the pros!!!!
I'm setting up a 40 breeder tank with a 20 long as a sump, my goal is to make it a mix reef, I'm a little confuse on how much water flow would I need, I talk to LFS about this and their told me I would beed at least 7-8 times the size of the tank to flow ( 8X40=320) but also I've seen some people on other forums that have more that! their have pumps as big as 600-700 GPG plus power head to add more flow,so any advice will be appreciated!!!
here are the equipment that I have in mind.
A
* CPR HOB overflow CS50 =300gph
*return pump mag3 =320
B
*CPR HOB overflow CS90 =600gph
*return pump mag5 or mag7 =500 to 700gph

Old schools thought was to turn the tank over through a sump up to 20 times an hour. Still a good idea on SPS tanks IMO. New thought is to use more energy efficient power heads in the tank to create flow and flip the tank through the sump or refugium with a lower energy pump. The energy guide I read in Coral Magazine suggested flipping the tank 6 times now. The other thing you need to consider is the pressure head on the pump. Those numbers you have are best case short return.

If you're gonna buy a cpr overflow you should just drill the tank. It would be cheaper and you could put plumbing in there to get 10,000 gph if you wanted to. You would have to drill through the side cause I'm assuming the 40BR is tempered on the bottom.

nop, it is not tempered, the reason why I'm choosing and HOB is because I don't know how or anyone that can drill the tank and don't want that tank to brake

There are a couple of LFS that will do it. You'd need to call around to find out.

You have to look up what your head loss will be on a given pump also and make your decision from there.

I would commit to either high flow corals or low flow corals right off the bat. It will be tought to have good zones for both in 40 gallons. If you want big acros, then get as much as you can in there.

gsxr rider drilled my 40 gal breeder in the bottom and Troylee made the overflow for me. i don't like some overflows that require an aqua lifter pump as mine died and almost had a flood. got hime just in time to pull the plug on the return pump.
