I know this was probably discussed at the last meeting but I wasn't there. So my question is what camera would be suitable for taking pics under leds. I just been having people use the camera on my phone which is 8mp of no optical lens ugliness.
I need 2 things
1 Ease of use for instructing people how to use it, i.e. a easy GUI
2 Cheap, this is just for my aquarium nothing else. I don't want it too cheap though, needs a decent lens..... When my hands still worked fine I used a Nikon f4 ;)

Current version is the G12. An excellent camera. You can get lens adaptors for it. The new Rebel is also nice starter and has many lens available. I'm not a Nikon person so I won't comment on them other than to say they make a fine camera.

I researched the canon g series a few times, I would like to get one. My little sis picked up a point n shoot nikon today out of nowhere and of course it sucks under led....
Saving for a cheap t3i or g12, or past generations anyone is selling off

It's ruff taking pictures with LED light. The white balance sensor goes nuts. Learn todo a custom white balance if your camera has it.

February?I'll believe that rumor when it happens. Here are a couple of quick pics from the G12.
Black and white of the Black and White Clown in the new Rose Nem that split off last week.

Hammer Coral straight from G12. Only change was to reduce the size for upload.

Canon has bee flakey on their releases for the last couple of years and it's hard to guess when. The tsunami won't help either. I think they lost two factories?

Can't speak for point and shoots, but I love my Nikon D7000, but it's not cheap like you're suggesting. From what I've learned the glass is far more important then the body. If you look at DSLRs focus more on lenses (especially a good macro) then on the camera. It probably comes down to budget. You might be able to get a decent Canon or Nikon DSLR and a macro lens for under $1000 new, dunno what that'd be used though.

I didn't think of their factory's being messed up, tsunami messed things up bad for japan, feel bad for them.
I have a bunch of slr lenses from my old nikon, will they fit a dslr body? Think I might get them from storage and sell them for a cheap dslr or g series.

Canon announced (http://www.dpreview.com/news/1110/11101810canoneos1dx.asp) the EOS-1D X Tuesday. March release for $6800 retail. There is some hope for a 7D replacement in 2008.

A updated eos 1d is a good sign of more models to come... I'm leaning towards a g12 or a t2i, i want out of nikon permanently when I get a canon...

I love my G12. I'm taking it to RAP over an SLR. It can do almost anything my SLR can. Almost.

Old Canon lenses should fit new Canons and old Nikon lenses should fit new Nikons. You'll run into a "problem", however, in that they may not be fully compatible. For example, I can use an older non CPU lens on my D7000, but only in manual or aperture priority modes only, and some camera features (such as adjusting aperture) must be done on the lens and not the camera.. There are a few examples listed (IX Nikkors for example) that are NOT compatible. In most cases they'll work though. One of my friends that's a photographer uses a D700 with his non CPU 200mm that's almost 20 years old.

I agree with what most people are putting up here. If you want to go DSLR, then a Canon Rebel is a nice start. The problem with most point and shoot cameras is that you cannot set a custom white balance. That's why the pictures look bad of tanks with LED's because you really need to do custom white balance with LED's. Really, you should do it whenever you shoot anything, but I won't get into all that. LOL So, as long as your newer camera (point & shoot or DSLR) can set a custom white balance, then you should be good to go with shooting under LED's.
As for the Canon 1D X...I'm just waiting for it to come out early next year. I need to add a second body to my 1D Mark II-N setup. ;-) The retail price won't be as high as $6800 though. It's just like MSRP on a new car; dealers will have it lower than that. Not by much, but it will be lower.
I also agree that Nikons are nice setups, but I have no experience in using them, so I can't give any info/suggestions about them. As for older lenses fitting newer bodies, it just depends. On Canon, you have to use an EF or EF-S series lens with their EOS system. I think it's possible to use an FD lens, but that is manual focus only. As someone previously stated, sometimes you can use an older lens on the newer body, but most of the features of the lens won't work.
