I was think about establishing a small (5gallon) refugium in the stand of my jbj 28. I have a small 5 gallon acrylic tank and a light source to grow macro but my concern is in the plumbing. I am thinking about using one of these http://www.amazon.com/Eshopps-PF-Nano-Overflow-Box/dp/B0042CX568 and some form of return pump but in the event the return pump fails how can i ensure that my tank wont be drained? I also have no idea how to attach the overflow tubing to the tank.
Any advice would be appreciated :)

It will only drain till the over flow loses suction. It should only lose about 1-2 gallon, just ensure you have the extra room in you fuge to hold the extra water if there is a power or pump failure.

+1 ^^^

There was a big discussion on here some time ago about hang on the back overflows. When the power goes out your tank will NOT drain a ton.. It only drains to the level of the top of the overflow bow inside the tank. 5 gal fuge may not be able to hold that much water though. Can you fit a 10 under there??What you need to be conserned with these types of overflows is loosing siphon. If that happens then your entire fuge volume overflows out of the display tank on to your floor :(

The bigger the fuge the better. IMO its pointless to have a super small fuge.
