I've been doing a little bit of research and have been wondering about using volcanic lava rock as live rock in an aquarium. A few people I've talked to have stated that it is decent for fresh water or pond settings, but bad for a reef aquarium as it could potentially leach unwanted minerals into the water. I haven't looked too heavily into this option but decided the first step would be to ask you guys. So, lemme know what your opinions/knowledge say and help me figure out what to do!

The problem with using alot of volcanic rock is that the term volcanic rock is so broad, you could literally be adding thousands of different rocks, with thousands x thousands of mineral composition possibilities. So it's kind of a **** shoot as to what yours will be.

Understood. I have a sample of this stuff that I found in town. Very porous and light, almost looks like black florist styrofoam.

Don't use it.
