Just wanted to know if anyone has a PAR meter that I can use (not borrow). I would be willing to bring my light fixture to your home or anywhere do get some readings. I just purchased a Orphek 156W for my 70gal Tall (36x15x30) and want to see all the hype for myself! Willing to pay if need be! Thanks, Joe

The orpheks are really good LED units. Not many with PAR units around town. But here is some info for you. The par reading are great to a point. Im guessing you will place the light about a foot off the surface of the water. The readings are good to about 14 inches down and begin to drop rapidly from there. At the bottom of your tank PAR will be around 90-100. 30 inches is tough to penetrate for any light.

Your zoanthid colors will POP!

You would have got more watts per gallon with the T5 I think. Still have it when you wanna keep clams and brains on the bottom ;)

Im willing to go in on a community par meter.

That's not a bad price for one. Problem is that you would only use it once or twice. A year. Maybe I will just by one and rent it out to members for 20$ a day or something....Hmmm

Watts per gallon means diddly squat!!!! How that ever derived I have no clue but you can use that for reference at all... You will be fine joe don't sweat it... Fwiw par don't mean much either we "the people" are more obsessed with par than corals are...;)

You can get just the sensor for a lot less. It will work with any multimeter, but I haven't looked into the details.

How that ever derived I have no clue but you can use that for reference at all Watts per gallon was all we knew ten years ago. I have several older books the preach watts per gallon. Lighting has to be the fastest growing advancement in the hobby. No one spoke of PUR ten years ago either, PAR was what people thought was used by coral. PAR is easier to read than PUR so it took off as the thing to check. Now we know PUR is what corals use but for the layman the only thing we can do is read the lighting wavelength specs and hope they are truthful.

I'm pretty excited I found the unit used for a great price . My biggest concern is housing clams and high end zoas about 36" from the fixture! And wanted to elimate heat since it will be mounted in my canopy

Zoos will be fine the clam place on a rock 10" or so off the bottom... I did some experiments on r2r and was growing Sps in the sand with power compacts 18" deep so it's possible man... While I totally agree with Toms statement a few post back, I think we are more prone to over lighting than anything... Honestly I feel we blast our corals with way to much light!!! Granted they do need light but I feel 175 mh will grow anything perfectly and it's proven... 250, 400 watters and 1000w t5 fixtures are ridiculous man honestly... I will tell you this much and it's proven facts in like keeping Sps and this can be etched in stone...

Those 4 things go in that order to have a sucsessfulll reef tank... Read some of sunny x articles @ rimless reef he is one of the most advanced people in the hobby ... His tank is used world wide in billboards and banners etc... Lighting comes third in this game... Just my 2..;)

thanks Lee...yeah I hear you I've been going crazy over this situation, this 30" tall has been over boggling my mind! and I know that i do it to myself sometime or should i say most of the time! Since this fixture is non dimmable do you have any suggestion on acclimating my corals to LED? I read alot about bleaching corals with LED, think i also ran into one of your post about your led experiences.

Place a couPle layers of egg crate or hang it high for a couple weeks then move it down and mount it inside your canopy.. Or use that 30" to your advantage and start it all on the bottom and what looks like it needs more move up until its happy... Your clam will also love being up on a rock instead of the sand... I have noticed that in the past with my clams... Only had one who liked to cliff dive haha... Stupid thing would jump down and walk around...
