moved.... this is a diy topic my favorite...
remove the bioballs and put a skimmer like you mentioned.... also i would upgrade the return pump for some extra flow....
unless you really wanna open it and remove the wall so you have a bigger tank and just a hob skimmer....![]()
Catch ya on the flip side!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got the Biocube HQI 29 gallon 3 weeks. I have a TON of questions! I plan on doing reef, probably most softies and LPS. I have some live rock I bought from another member that's been in for about 2 weeks now. The skimmer that comes with it floods. I only tested it to see how it works, but the cup fills up with clear water. I know that better ones exist, but do they fit cleanly? My tank didn't come with bioballs, just a refugium area. Water appears to flow into the area and out of it on the top and bottom. Is there anywhere in this thing to put a carbon sock or Chemipure that the water will actually flow through? Obviously, the tank is cycling, so I'm just letting it go right now, but I'm trying to prepare for the next steps. I also am considering the bigger pump upgrade, but the one that came with it is doing pretty well so far. My main questions revolve around what to do with this refugium area....
when looking at the tank from the front, chamber 1 is the over flow, chamber 2 is the middle, and chamber 3 is the return.
currently i have my bicoube 14 set up as follows:
1. cut the tab from chamber 1 to chamber 2 so theres more flow
2. i have the biocube skimmer in chamber 1.. if yours is overflowing turn the air down. it can take a few days to breakin...
3. chamber 2 i have liverock although some people have turned it into a refugium by adding a macro algae and a light into it.
4. chamber 3 i have left the stock pump, but theres a slot infront of it i put a bag of filterfloss and carbon in front of so that it draws the water through it.
you can also mod the lights by adding another PC or changing to LEDs... i found some 9 inch t5's im going to try to fit in there.
ive heard of people adding fans and stuff too.
oh and you can get a media basket for chamber 2 to stack live rock carbon chemipure or whatever
here is a good diagram of the flow on the biocube... you can kinda see where i put my carbon/floss in front of the return pump.
Agreed with above...![]()
Catch ya on the flip side!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and if you can con lee into making you a media tray that would be even better lol
240 up and running now Leebuilt skimmer tunzes lights m/h.
29 qt and piaccaso clown home softies starting high end zoa tank
55 cut in half fish qt
100 grow out tank sps only tied in to big system.
Go to mediabaskets.com. A guy named Stevie T made these media baskets for biocubes, there pretty sweet. The top layer put filter floss. Then some chaeto, with and underwater light, that u can also get from Stevie T, and finally chemipure elite on the bottom.
Stock pump is junk. It will fail, someday. Go to lucky fish on spring mountain and visit Henery. Hes cool. Get a maxi get 1200 for your return. No matter what kind of return pimp you get, you'll never have enough random flow in the tank. Het either a hydor koralia 2, or a ecotech vortech mp10. Price difference between the two is about 180, but there is a dramatic difference.
Stock lid on the biocube hqi is trash. Go to nano-reef.com. Go to the hardware classifieds and search for aquamesh. You won't be dissapointed.

except that there is also a hole at the top-ish section of chamber 3, where the pump is. So I can't just put crushed live rock or carbon or stuff like that in chamber 2 and expect full flow through it, right? Is there a max fill line for these chambers? It doesn't really talk about a max fill line in any of the literature. maybe I'm keeping it too full of water...perfect diagram btw!!
